Sapto Djojokartiko was photographed by Hakim Satriyo along with his muse, Noorani Sukardi, in a lace dress from the designer styled by Aldi Indrajaya, for the accompanying image from “Edgy Meets Classic” article that was published in the December 2011 issue of Indonesia Tatler.

Below are the excerpts from the article:

When most Indonesian fashion designers make Paris and Milan primary references for ideas and creativity, designer Sapto Djojokartiko, instead, makes London a Mecca of his design inspiration.

“London, despite being a gray, gloomy city, influences the way I design,” he says. But Sapto has this sartorial flamboyance that strongly takes traditional elements into account in his design. He imagines folktales, folkdances, music and local architectural styles of Java (Solo is his hometown) and incorporates them into his works of art.

To become the person he is today, Sapto admits that he had to go through a long, winding journey. “I’ve been doing various professions throughout my life, from a make-up artist to a stylist. It was a challenge, but it’s my past experiences that have shaped me,” the designer explained. Sapto, a proud graduate of “L’Ecole Supérieure des Arts et techniques de la Mode”, established his own label, “Sapto Djojokartiko” at the end of 2007.

He introduced to Tatler his beautiful muse, Noorani Sukardi, who for the photo shoot, swanked a dramatic and yet elegant black long evening gown—a fashion piece inspired from a book entitled “The King, the Witch, and the Priest” by Pramoedya Ananta Toer. The dress looks dark and is powerfully emotional; he felt so much admiration for it because he believes the piece successfully gets his message across. “Women nowadays should look edgy and yet could maintain her elegance at the same time”

“Rani (as many refer to Noorani Sukardi) exudes a strong aura. On the one hand, she can be rebellious and tomboy, while on the other hand, she can be very feminine. She just looks perfect in that dress.” Sapto added.

Both Sapto and Rani share the same star sign, Libra. And that’s probably why they got along so well, for they share similar “strong” characteristics. Rani said she admired the designer’s creations because they were not only comfortable but also fitted her personality well.
“Their silhouettes flatter your body shape,” she said.
“He is totally an artist. I hope that in the future, he will always stay humble and will always be eager to keep learning from others, especially in this cut-throat industry.” Rani concludes.
